Moscow Affiliate Conference by Leadbit

Hey guys! What to do when your campaign is not profitable!

Hey Guys ! Its been a long time since I posted something on this blog due to health issues and other time management issues and a busy schedule..

I took a long break from writing something, so today I thought I would write write a quick post about one of the most commonly asked questions about making campaigns profitable.  It’s always a difficult question to answer without knowing anything about the campaign or its details, But i will try to point out a few things which would always help you out to tweak your campaigns. As not every campaign is profitable at the start and you don’t make money.

How it feels when your campaigns fail.

Know when to direct link or use landing page 

One of the biggest problems is affiliates are creating landing pages and the majority of people who face failures  can’t be bothered to create landing pages. I am not implying that direct linking doesn’t work at all it does but in some cases , Specially when we talk about pay per sale offers, it’s almost impossible to convert them with direct linking .. Unless you are promoting a well known brand or an offer which has a persuasive pre-sell page. The biggest advantage you get with the landing pages is that you can create multiple angles.

For example lets say I am promoting an email submit about Iphone 6…

Such offers have been running for years now, Now if i am direct linking the prospect will get this message ” Get a chance to win a free Iphone 7 by signing up to offer ”

If i use the same offer with a landing page, I can easily use Christmas as my angle and deliver a message which says something like this ” Double your Christmas celebrations by getting a chance to win free Iphone 7 ”

Now by using the landing page I wrapped same old campaign into a Christmas Special Offer. Which is not something people are used to everyday, I simply made it more believable by using Christmas as a reason my prospects should believe/follow me…

If you don’t want to work on landing pages at least ask your affiliate manager or advertiser to provide you with the new or different offer links. On any reasonable offer,   advertisers would be happy to help you out and get you different offer landing pages. If you have good volume the advertisers won’t hesitate to get some new offer landing pages created for you as well.

Figure out the problem

So you got a campaign up and running but after a few conversions and spending 3x or 4x amount of payout you stopped the campaign because its not making you any profits. While quitting or blaming traffic source/ CPA network is easy The real job, the difficult task is to read your data and find out the mistakes you made, Maybe you are not getting enough CTR, or your landing page is bad and the offer isn’t receiving enough clicks, or your offer is receiving traffic but its not converting. Maybe some of the   bad keywords are eating up your whole campaign budget and the ones which convert do not have enough budget allocated to them or they simply need increase in their bids. This is the best time to sit back and find out where you are making mistakes and study the data you have been collecting on your tracker and consult your traffic network and your CPA Network affiliate managers. One piece of advise I always give to people under my CPA Marketing coaching program  is to never hesitate in asking questions, As this is what helps you most and this is why your CPA networks and your Traffic Networks have hired their account managers; to help you out! So feel free to seek advise from your account managers if you are unable to figure out the problems in your campaign. Its always a best idea to test your offer yourself to make sure its conversion pixels fire before starting advertising campaigns.

Collect Data !

So you hear from someone that they are making good money on a specific traffic source and you just jump into that traffic source and find it hard to make your campaigns profitable? Here is the reality, Every traffic source is hard to convert, the only difference between you and the person who is printing money from the same traffic source is that the successful person you are trying to copy has data on that traffic network. Lets talk about a few traffic networks here; Leadimpact, many people would complain about their their rubbish traffic quality but what they forget is that successful people have collected enough data with them that they are able to filter out bad traffic sources, Same is the case with Pop Ads, Zero Park, Cash ads , 7 Search, many other similar networks and Native Adnetworks.

By data I don’t only mean your converting keywords but also the traffic source ids and in native ads placements and widget ids. Once you have a adequate collection of the sources in your data, you can easily filter out the bad traffic sources in your networks and spend your budget on the sources which provide you converting traffic. It’s never hard to mail your Adnetwork and ask them for their tracking features ( what you can track ) and their tracking tokens.

I must say I really liked their homepage and it’s very unusual for a network in the CPA Industry  to have good looking websites, ( have a look at my blog) but Adcombo has really made a very positive change in this industry and their homepage really looks awesome and gives a great first impression.

This is  a big headache, especially for newbies these days, I have noticed that the waiting time for the account approval process with majority of  CPA networks is increasing more and more.  CPA Networks are understaffed and have no staff to manage everything properly or their affiliate managers are too busy with managing their existing affiliates( A few very popular networks are best examples).  This results in new affiliates waiting for weeks to get their accounts approved, With Adcombo that account approval time is decreased down to 24 hours, which is great for those affiliates who are tired of waiting for weeks to get approved on CPA Networks. As long as you are sending legit traffic and you know the basics of affiliate marketing you shouldn’t have any problem with the approval process at all .

In main stream CPA Networks its really hard to find solid offers from different non competitive geo,  I am sure my readers who have been promoting mobile will understand what i am talking about… For example lets talk about India , Pakistan South Asia and the Middle East. These countries are full of potential and they are almost untouched so far, from affiliate marketing. You won’t find many offers for these countries in your mainstream CPA Networks this means there is almost no competition or not many affiliates are promoting in these countries .. There is nothing more annoying than having an affiliate manager who never helps you or answers the questions you ask from them, or even when they do, they give you a canned response. I have seen in almost all networks except 2,3 networks, the majority of affiliate managers will never try to make extra effort to help you out.

How to pick up a winner CPA offer

This is the most frequently asked question in the Affiliate industry, and a step which can make or break your affiliate campaign. No matter what traffic source you choose, without choosing the right offer it’s very difficult to succeed. One of the reason many newbies end up losing all their money is because they fail to choose the right offer.

A few examples of picking up wrong offer are.

  • Picking up offer with too much competition.
  • Picking up offer with bad conversion rate/ Offers with too much bad reputation.
  • Offers with small audience
  • Offers with hard conversion requirements

So lets have a look at all these examples one by one ..

CPA Offers with too much competition.

Booking.com is a perfect example of such types of offers. When it was new or off the CPA Networks its conversion rates were touching the skies. However as soon as everyone realized its converting well and has a huge potential, All the affiliates along with their cats jumped in and started promoting this offer. Those who started this offer early made good money and those who joined the party after realizing people are making good money on this offer couldn’t make good profits. Because by the time they were able to realized the earning potential the offer had there was already plenty of competition. The new guys couldn’t make campaigns successful, now don’t get me wrong this offer still works however if you think it would be easy to launch this offer on main stream networks targeting top tier countries it might not be a good idea, you will have to work on new angles and explore new international market in order to survive. So the lesson here is not to follow crowd instead create your own path.

TIP : If you really want to promote this one I would suggest you to go international.

Picking up offer with bad conversion rate/ Offers with bad reputation.

Here I am talking about beat up offers/Niches, which are already dead offers/websites with bad reputation. Penny auctions comes into mind. The better reputation an offer has the better conversion rate you would get and the easier it would be for you to promote. One of the best strategy I personally use is to contact the services I personal like/use and contact them asking if they have any affiliate program and most of the times they do have affiliate program or even if they don’t have I would contact one of their competitors and join them. If they have an affiliate program this is one of the best ways to get offers which are not available to affiliates (as the majority of affiliates rely on CPA networks to get them offers). You can also ask your CPA Networks to get offers from your favorite website/service.

Offers with small audience

This is a common problem, some time a niche or an offer doesn’t have a very broad audience and you get very limited amount of traffic. The ideal offer for you would be where you have large audience specially when it comes to PPV traffic. For example, if you are promoting campaigns related to injury claims in UK you wont find many targets with good traffic volumes.

Offers with hard conversion requirements

Now this is another major factor sometimes affiliates ignore. Whenever you are about to start promoting an offer, make sure you test it yourself first. If your network is using “Cake Platform” they have offer test option by default, however if your network doesn’t have this option there is no harm in using VPN (If offer is for a different country) and registering for the offer yourself and see at what point your offer converts. For example, in dating you would find many offers where you get conversion only when a user becomes a paid member and in the network offer description the offer is listed as email submit/complete signup. You can let your affiliate manager know the conversion id so they can remove the test conversion from your stats once you are done testing the offer. By testing the offer, yourself you will also get a better idea about how the offer works and would be able to guide your audience about it as well which will help you increase your conversion rate. Coming back to the topic, I always recommend to start with simple offers which require less action from the end user and are easy to convert. Most of times when starting out people run for the high paying offers however its just like a fresh graduate running after a managerial position in a company.
So these were the examples explaining how people mess-up when they are choosing offers. Now let’s talk about how not to mess things up form the very start and how to the pickup right offers.

  • Ask your affiliate manager
  • Look for the offers with popular names/reputation
  • Keep an eye out for fresh the offers/niches
  • Ask your affiliate network if they have offers which are not made public yet.

Ask your affiliate manager

Your affiliate manager could be one of the best advisors if you know exactly what to ask for. In most cases people have no idea what kind of questions they should be asking their affiliate managers or are too scared to get in touch with them.  Instead of asking your affiliate manager the generic questions be very specific. For example, if you are good at a specific traffic source ask them to give you the best converting offers working well with that specific traffic source and get as much information from them as possible for example ask them about what kind of landers work well. What kind of targets to choose etc..
Also your relation with your affiliate manager is very important and to improve that make sure you send them greeting cards on special occasions or a few kind words of appreciations will make their day and they would be more then happy to help you out as much as possible.

Look for offers with popular names/reputation

As I mentioned before a bad reputation can really hurt your conversions in the same way promoting well known brands can really increase your conversions and make things much easier for you. For example, it would be much easier to sell “Beach Body” due to its powerful commercials and “More Niche” with their real celebrity testimonials as compared to a random offer nobody has heard about before. As I stated above you can also work directly with your favorite services or ask your network to get their offer.

Keep an eye out for fresh offers/niches

This one is my favorite, Be the first ones to try out an offer or even a traffic sources. Whenever you discover something new make sure you try them at least for once. I learned this when I was promoting CPA Offers using 7 Search and I used to pick up all new offers from maxbounty and try them out when others used to complain about how 7search is the worst network and their IPhone email submits are not working. Related to the point where I discussed how high competition can crush your chances of success. Let’s say there are two roads one is crowded and the other one is empty, which one will take you home earlier? The one where every driver is heading and causing a traffic jam or the one where you have no traffic? Of curse you would go for the second one that is the case here.  For sure you might lose money as **THE OFFER IS NOT PROVEN WINNER YET** Because its new but still you have no competition and it is better to loose money by trying something new instead of loosing your money where everyone else is loosing.  And there has to be someone who will make it a proven winner, that better be you then some else.

Ask your affiliate network if they have offers which are not made public yet
In many cases affiliate networks test offers internally by running traffic to them before releasing them to the public, or they just let a few selected affiliates run that offer before the offer is made public to other affiliates. Try to be one of the first batch of the affiliates to try new types of offers instead of deciding to try them once offers are saturated and there is no more juice left in the offer.

Does PPV Traffic Still Work in 2016?

One of the most common questions I have been asked for years and still people ask me; Is PPV traffic still worth investment and does it still work, especially for CPA offers?

I have been promoting CPA offers for 4 years now. I started off with 7Search in the times when people were talking about how bad quality 7Search traffic is and how it never works for them. However I choose 7search because it was affordable for me ( I had low budget) and also the fact that there was little competition as most of times people were scared of loosing money on 7Search and they considered it as a bad quality traffic source. From there after, building a handsome budget, I moved onto PPV traffic as 7search was working well for me. However, there was also not much traffic volume on that traffic source.

Since then I have been promoting PPV and I still am promoting my campaigns on PPV traffic. I have seen many PPV networks come and go and what I want to say here is that we are in an industry where things keep evolving. Things keep changing and what you need in order to become successful is to keep adopting new trends.

Now to the answer weather PPV is dead or not, Of course for the people who used to simply direct link campaigns all the time, PPV is really dead. Those days are almost gone, specially if you are thinking you can make profits by direct linking same 3 years old offer, that is never going to be possible.

So here are a few things you should consider if you want to become successful with PPV in 2016 …

How to make PPV traffic work for you in 2016

Learn about your traffic network.

How many times have you contacted your account manager with your traffic source? Have you ever asked them about their traffic inventory or what kind of tracking tokens are available etc? For example, I would like to mention most people complain about bad quality traffic from leadimpact. You can easily put a stop to bad quality by asking your account manager to only give you leadimpact’s own inventory traffic, without third parties and also by using %brand% token to filter bad quality publishers and ask your manager to block the bad quality publishers.

Adopt new offers /niches.

When ever you have a new type of offer, you get better conversions; as those offers are not saturated or those products/services which are popular but not yet available on CPA Networks. For example, one of the well-known offers is booking.com, we have been promoting that offer directly with booking.com for a long time before they were available on CPA Networks. Many popular brands have their own affiliate programs so if you can not find an offer on a CPA Network make sure you contact that brand directly and ask them if they have their affiliate program.

Use Landing Pages.

Last month we created over 100 landing pages and the total size of that folder was above 3GB. One thing I always advise to people is to keep improving your landing pages, once you have created landing pages do not stop and keep improving those landing pages and keep editing them. As I said before, the days of direct linking are gone, If you are looking for examples etc. we have are offering 40+ landing pages as an upsell to PPV Rocker V4 Buyers ( The new Updated PPV course I recently launched)

Focus list building as money is in the list.

This is no secret, money is always in your list, If you have a proper funnel and you can get started with building your lists you can make 5X of what you make by sending your traffic directly to the advertisers. List building offers you two advantages; 1. You can reach your prospects whenever you want without any additional costs. For example, if you are sending traffic to an offer without list if you want to advertise again to the customer you will have to pay again to the traffic source. 2. By building list you have full control over your subscribers and you can send them emails anywhere anytime you want.

The second advantage is that you can promote multiple products to your list, from CPA offers to click bank products or any other traditional network products as well and earn commissions.

Try new traffic networks.

One of the biggest problem of using traditional top networks is that the are full of competition. As when people start learning about PPV they only come to know a few big names, which increases the competition and makes it hard for some people to make profits specially for starters. So if that is what your problem is, start looking out of these networks and you will find many other networks out there which you can use. In fact, there are many networks which share their inventory with the bigger networks as well so you will find many small networks with same traffic quality like the big networks.

Never Give Up.

This one is specially for those who are just starting out and are about to give up, this is normal and happens with all of us. Be it Facebook, PPC, Media buying or any other traffic source you will have to learn the ropes, no one can become a millionaire in just one day and it takes countless sleepless nights to become successful so if you are just thinking to give up because things are not work for you, It would be worth it to find your mistakes and find an expert who can help you with your campaigns.

Meet the man behind the Thrive Tracker – Tom Fang

In todays interview I have Tom Fang with me, Tom is the Founder of iPyxel Creations company which managed Thrive Tracker, which he funded out of his own pocket upon leaving an early career in real estate private equity. I hope you all would enjoy reading his interview with us and learning about his tracker.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How old are you? Where do you live?

I am 28 years old, and I currently live in Santa Monica, CA, about a half block from the beach.  I moved here recently and am really loving it.
Life wasn’t always as stable though.  My parents immigrated to the US from China when I was 5, and I didn’t see them again until when I was 9, when they brought me over to spend the rest of my childhood in Fargo, North Dakota.

They separated pretty much right away, and I was raised by my mother, who really struggled tremendously trying to survive with me in this country while having nothing and no ability to legally work (student visa).

I am truly grateful to this country for the opportunities and the benefits that children are able to get, else I would not be here today.  I think we often times take for granted how it is here in comparison to a lot of the world.

How long have you been working in this industry, and how did you get involved? What was your first money maker?

Depends on the definition of “the industry”. I first started dabbling in internet marketing about 5 years ago when I was still working but unfulfilled.  I started working with a partner who had introduced me to spamming.

That didn’t sit well with us for long, so we started to get into paid traffic and started to buy from Plenty of Fish (POF), which was hot at the time.

Because I was very good with Excel, I built an entire automated model to optimize our POF operation that would allow us to run hundreds of campaigns and thousands of ads at one time with relative ease as the model would spit out the best and worst performers.

At peak, we did a little over $30,000 revenue in one month, but my passion was never to run campaigns.  I wanted to turn what I built into software so others can use it.

Can you please tell us a little about your professional background?

I was lucky enough to get into the best business school in the country and graduated from Wharton with a degree in finance. After school, I went to work for Walton Street Capital, which is a multi-billion dollar private equity fund for large commercial real estate investments, where the biggest deal I worked on was a $310 MM+ debt deal where we foreclosed on 2.65 MM square feet of office space in Seattle.

While I still have strong interest in real estate and love my finance background, I was always more interested in technology and the internet, and pretty early on, I knew I had to try to build a software business.

What is the most expensive thing you ever bought?

I’m really not too materialistic. I think the most expensive thing outside of business expenses would be that I recently spent over $3,000 on a personal training package at the Venice Gold’s Gym.  I am now in the best shape of my life.  If we’re talking about a thing, then I think my $1,500 Surface Pro would be it.

What is your biggest achievement so far? And also what are your biggest failures?

My biggest achievement would definitely be building my company iPyxel and our latest product Thrive. I am a non-technical, solo founder of a bootstrapped, profitable early stage SaaS startup targeting the high traffic, data-heavy performance advertising market. You don’t hear that combination every day, and it’s through a desperate determination and a lot of time and effort that we are here today.

What tips would you give to those who want to take the path of entrepreneurship?

Entrepreneurship can take on a lot of forms depending on your definition, but if we’re talking about starting a company, I say:Don’t do it. It probably won’t work, and the risk-adjusted return for your time isn’t worth it.But, true entrepreneurs can’t NOT do it.  That’s how you know you should start a company.  I believe if you’re an entrepreneur, then you would be an entrepreneur, despite great odds of failure.  You’d already be doing it, or at the very least, you have concrete plans on when you’ll be quitting your job and doing it full time.If you are going to do it, I suggest you self-fund it or raise a little bit from friends and family and try to sell your product until you can make enough to live.

Are you an affiliate yourself?

No, I have not been an affiliate for over 3 years, since the POF days. I have a lot of close connections with affiliates so I know what affiliates need in a product and service, but, I believe it is a major conflict of interest to be running traffic and also build a tracking platform.

Tell us about Thrive and what inspired you to start this service?

Originally, I started Thrive because all of the self-hosted trackers out there at the time were really bad and did not have a world-class development team behind it who could product a cutting edge product for modern times. We’re still, by far, the best self-hosted tracking option. Today, Thrive has a self-hosted plan, but also a much bigger, and thriving Cloud Service, where we’re competing head to head with Voluum on. When we started offering a cloud option, I didn’t expect the demand, but today, our Cloud Service is 2/3 of our total revenue, and we’re reinvesting massively into greatly improving our cloud platform for years to come.Our Cloud Service is deployed on 8, soon to be 9, of Amazon’s data centers.  Our complex caching system keeps all the data loading fast, no matter how much data you have over time. Lastly, I think trust is a big thing.  We have a lot of big affiliates use Thrive simply because they trust us, as we’ve demonstrated we have the user’s best interest every single time.  We don’t have media buyers, and we never run traffic ourselves.

As we all know setting up tracking platforms like yours is not a bed of roses, what was your biggest problem when you started?

The biggest problem in the beginning was figuring out how to handle huge scale. We want to serve the affiliate who is just starting, but we also want to serve the biggest affiliates in the industry.We really hammered this home and went after this relentlessly, and we will soon be able to claim that we have the most scalable tracker with the fastest redirect speeds worldwide.

What are special features in your tracking platform which we can not find in other trackers?

The devil is always in the details. Thrive does a lot of things that make your lives easier, and it’s hard to point to specific things.  For example, Thrive adds automation capabilities so that if an offer goes down, Thrive has an offer swap function that allows you to instantly swap that offer from all of your campaigns for a different offer.If I had to name specific features, here are a couple more:Cloaker/Bot Filter:  We have pre-configured filters to filter out bot traffic so that they do not contaminate your actual data, and we log all of the bot clicks in a separate report.  You can also design your own cloaking system and send any unwanted visitors to a ‘safe page’ by creating multiple layered rules based on IP, referrer, URL-parameter, geo, device, browser, OS, etc.Multi-User Access:  You can create multiple roles and users that only have specific access to certain parts of the application or even specific sets of campaigns.  You want to grow your business eventually right?  Then any employees/outsourcers can have their own logins and not be exposed to the rest of your business.  You can also have multiple media buyers only responsible for their own campaigns and you have the ability to view everything

Can your tracker handle large traffic volume?

As mentioned previously, this was the first thing we focused on. I didn’t want to build another “me-too” tracker that could not handle high volume at fast speeds.On our Cloud Service, we have some users who are running over 10 million clicks/day, and we’re looking to continually bring on even bigger affiliates and media buying groups.The great thing about us is that if you run over 1 million clicks/day, you start to see significant savings over our competitors like Voluum.  At the biggest volumes, we’re about 50% less expensive, which makes a BIG difference at that kind of volume.

How large is your team? How many people work under you?

Our full-time team right now is still small at 4 people. We have a few more part-timers, and I use a lot of contractors for specific, specialized tasks.  We’re extremely lean, and we’re proud to have accomplished so much with so little.For a long time, it was just me and David, our VP of Engineering.  This next year we are planning on growing more.

There are a lot of tracking solutions these days, what makes yours different and how does it stand out?

We’ve discussed scale, we’ve discussed speed and performance, we’ve discussed our dedication to privacy and trust, and we’ve discussed some awesome features.I think in addition to all of that, it’s worth mentioning that Thrive has the ability to track pretty complex funnels and upsell sequences.We have a “Branches” feature where you can create multiple rotations on the same page, in a sequence, or otherwise link to it anywhere in a funnel.This allows you to do multiple steps, multiple split tests of different steps, and keep “branching” off in your funnel as many times as you want to track the most complex funnels.Additionally, we cater to power users. We have a fully documented and dedicated API for all users.  You can control all reporting and campaign management functions through the API.Recently, LPOptimizer integrated with Thrive, and we hope more 3rd party products utilize Thrive’s API.

Lastly, I think it’s worth mentioning that any of our users will tell you we have the best support in the industry.  The only thing we care about is providing the best tracking product and service for our users.  Our recent adoption of ZenDesk is another commitment to provide better support.

We get a lot of tickets that come in and be answered within 10 minutes, and our users are often surprised like, “wow, that was quick!”

What are your plans for the future?

We’re going to continue to work our asses off to improve upon Thrive and build the best tracking product and service in the industry. We have huge huge plans for Thrive, including integration of call tracking, affiliate network tracking capabilities, mobile app tracking, and vertical-specific tools.

What are the challenges you are facing right now and how are you planning to overcome those challenges?

Our biggest challenge is finding the best software engineers and convincing them to come work for us, because it’s often hard to understand this industry if you’re an outsider.Great software engineers in the US are very expensive, but we’re committed to building a world class engineering organization in the US.

What are your favorite traffic sources? And why?

We are completely traffic source-agnostic as we never look into user data to assess whether something is doing well or not. We’re fully focused on providing our users the best platform to do their jobs.

If you could go back in time and do things differently, what one thing would you change?

I would have spent a lot more of my pre-college days learning to code and taking a crack at building things and entrepreneurship.I would have also have us built and launch Thrive earlier so we could be first movers instead of second.

What budget do you suggest to start advertising with affiliate marketing?

I think a lot of people who start media buying expect to make a lot with very little.The mindset needs to change to the fact that you are starting a business, and a real business requires investment and the right tools.I think you should make at least $10,000 from a job first, then set it aside to invest in your business. Don’t skimp on the tools, the hosting, the domains, etc. etc.  Give yourself the best shot.

Survey Shows Facebook will be the Dominant Social Network for the Super Bowl

With the super bowl just days away most people are as excited about the commercials and marketing opportunities as they are about the actual football game. In recent years, one of the biggest points of interest for many in the digital marketing industry has been on how people will be talking about the game online. For years the two main options have been Twitter and Facebook, and that certainly won’t be changing for Super Bowl XSLIX.

According to a recent online survey run by Salesforce Marketing Cloud, 66% of viewers plan on posting about the game on Facebook. Twitter, on the other hand, will be getting just 56% of the total conversation. Obviously this shows that there will be many people who are using both social media options throughout the game.

In third place will be Instagram, at 31% and fourth place is Snapchat at just 11%.

These numbers were then broken down by age and other factors as well. Some interesting statistics include the following:

  • 78% of females will be using Facebook vs. 45% using Twitter
  • For males, 55% use Facebook and 68% use Twitter
  • Viewers who are 18-24 years old will be the biggest users of Snapchat, at 43%
  • The older age groups, those aged 35-44 will stick with Facebook, at 76%

The survey wasn’t just about what platforms people will be using to discuss the game, however. It also looked at how they would be accessing these social networks. Of all the Super Bowl viewers, the survey found that 61% of them will have their smartphone in their hand throughout the game to post on social media. 24% will be using a tablet, and just 20% will have their laptop. Again, many people will be using two or more devices during the game.

Of course, millions of people will be sharing their thoughts and emotions about the game, but millions more will be talking about and sharing their favorite commercials of the day. Given the millions of dollars many companies are spending to get their ads run during the game, this will be most welcomed by all the marketers.

It is expected by many that whichever commercials turn out to be ‘fan favorites’ this year will actually be seen far more on YouTube and other online sites than they will during the actual game. In fact, some of the companies have already published their commercials themselves online, or started hyping up their Super Bowl ads.

How to Start Affiliate Marketing with a Team

Hey guys It’s been a while since I posted on my blog , The reason is I have been busy with a few projects I am working on and I will post about them in coming days. So let’s come to today’s topic. Most of successful affiliates I have met so far who are making big number and making living by working as affiliates have one thing in common and that is they have their own team. You can make a few thousands of dollars working alone but i must admit that affiliate marketing space is getting so much competitive that to survive and keep your campaigns up and running it is a must to have your own team.

Now there could be different types for example more than one affiliates working together as partners or having your own team of employees / Freelancers working under you. The biggest benefit you get by having your own team is that you get people with different mindsets and expertise and when you plan a campaign you can get different opinions and suggestions which can really help you to improve your overall campaign building process. Be it creating landing pages, Marketing angles or targeting.  And it gives you more freedom and time allows to spend more free time.

How to Start Affiliate Marketing with a Team

Building an Effective Team

Now this is the toughest part. Because you will have to surround yourself with people you can trust and can easily work with. The biggest problem in affiliate marketing is that most of affiliates fear sharing their ideas with other people and sometimes even this happens. For example when you hire someone and teach them everything or after they have learn how to do affiliate marketing from you they will run away and start affiliate marketing themselves. Or if you are working with another fellow affiliate and once you start building successful campaigns he will end the partnership and start doing everything by his own. No one can stop such things however if you are in affiliate marketing you should know how to deal with such situations and consider them as a part of the game and keep trying as finally you will find someone who you can trust and won’t turn you down when you are successful. Personally this happened many times with me when I hired people for myself and once I trained them and they learned the ropes they simply disappeared, however I always considered it as their own loss and moved on and for sure you will learn something new which you can use again to be successful. So here are a few tips I would like to share from my own experience, what I have learned so far…

Working as partners.

This type of team is best for those who are on a limited budget and can’t afford to hire their own team. In that case the best bet is to find other likeminded people and work with them. The first step in this type of partnership is to analyze your own abilities and skills and make a list of things which you have and also of those skills and abilities you lack in (For example you might be able to create amazing landing pages but can`t think of marketing angles and you are not good at knowing who to target etc.).  Once you have written down all your weaknesses and strengths the next step is to look for the people who can help you with your weaknesses. The best bet is to look out of forums which are specifically for affiliates for example  Stack That Money , Aff Playbook , Dojo and social media pages and groups. I mentioned paid forums because that is where I would be able to find the affiliates who are serious about affiliate marketing and are interested in making affiliate marketing work for them and that is why they are paying monthly membership fees.  One more thing when looking for your partners is that never ignore people because of their experience instead look at what abilities and skills they have and how they can actually help you and if they fill your needs or not. You might find many people who do have good skills but they are not successful because of the limited budget they have in their hands. One more thing you should keep in mind is that when you are doing partnership with someone make sure your goal is to build a long term partnership and be honest and transparent about everything. To start building trust you can start with small budget campaigns and slowly keep on increasing the budget this way you will be able to know that your partner is trust worthy or not.

TIP: Try finding like minded people who are in same region as you and you can meet them physically.

Hiring your own team

This type is more suitable for those who have enough budget to afford hiring their own team. You could simply hire freelancer on part time basis however i prefer to hire people on full time basis.  Now this type again depends on how much help you need and also depends on your affordability for example if you want anyone to only handle your landing page design jobs, or to do research, Manage your advertising campaigns on advertising networks or you want to hire entire team to manage everything for you. when you start hiring people for yourself this task can get very hectic as you will have to train your employees and explain to them how you want them to work and what you are doing. I like to make my employees sign employee non disclosure agreement. So that even if they leave you they are bound by law not to release your data info or use it. Another important thing is to share only those things which your employees are supposed to know over sharing info with your employees and freelancers will always cause problems. Once of the biggest question about hiring is payment terms. Personally paying fix salary to your employees always gives them more confidence as they have the assurance that they will be paid at the end of the month and also adding performance bonus motivates your employees to perform even better. Another great tip is to appreciate your employees when they show good performance is to send them some physical presents as it boosts their morale and keep them happy.  The best bet would be to hire people within your own region and however you can also hire some good and dedicated employees  from countries like Philippines and it won’t cost you thousands of dollars either to hire them on full time basis.
TIP: If you hire employees on remote positions make sure you use team monitoring software to make sure your employees are not wasting time on your expense.

Financial Problems and newbie affiliates

It is also a business model, which you can use to make a living working from home, without being answerable to anyone, or following a 9 to 5 routine. Thats why it is a big attraction for new people who are looking to make money online.. In fact it was the business model which made me what I am today and that’s what I am now known for. A few years back, I was dying to get any kind of job or up for anything as long as it could pay me something between RS 2500- 7000 which makes hardly 25 to 70 dollars. There was a time I was doing two jobs one as a website developer, a 6 hour job and I wasn't paid a single dime screw you CNI UK and Abid Kazmi  and another; I was also working for a call center for 2500 Pakistani rupees where I had to make calls for almost 8 hours. I needed money desperately at the time to support my education, and later to support my family. Nothing else but the Internet was the source which made me money and made me stand on my own feet (I have written about it in detail in my article From zero to Dubai life – Journey of an enterpurner.)

Let’s get back to the subject of todays post instead of boring you with what I did and how. However, I would like to tell you why I am repeating all this again. The reason being that I almost, if not every day, or every week, get contacted by people who are in financial trouble and want to get out of it and more than that, those who have lost their wealth on buying all the courses (specially WSOs about how to make money), and courses related to CPA Marketing. Now those same people are struggling to pay even their bills and there are many people who actually (without informing their parents or family members) HAVE lost money on buying all these courses and now they are finding it hard to hide their secrets, and by some means want to earn what they have lost.

There are many cases where a few people when they find all these shiny products and make $1000 a day formulas, Borrow money from their friends and family members on promise that they will return with profit and those in developed countries, Use their credit cards and start spending money on courses and WSOs like water ... I am not saying that these courses are a waste of money, i personally have learned a lot from these courses, a few i would like to mention are; the ones released by Kenster and Traffic Black Book, they have taught me a lot of things i never knew. I also have a PPV course which i am selling on warrior forum.
The biggest problem with the majority of people who have such problems, is they don’t know how and where to spend money, they’re greedy. Let me tell you, without a doubt, CPA Marketing will make you tons of money but it will take time. It’s just like any other real life business, just like opening a new coffee shop. You won’t make thousands in profit from day one… It will take time for you to get regular and loyal customers, if you are expecting to make $1000 on day one, just because you have invested $1000 on your coffee shop setup, You are wrong. You will have to build a reputation and standards, you will only get customers when people around you will know that you have opened a shop with good standards. Which might take months. If you don’t know how to make coffee, you will lose customers till the day you become a master at making coffee. The same applies with affiliate marketing, before you start making money you will have to learn how to drive traffic, and to do that you will have to invest some money. How much you will have to invest depends on you. How early you can pick up things and learn the ropes? If you are a quick learner you will do it easily, if not, you will take some time.

Now this is where people suck. When you have borrowed money from someone, obviously you wont tell them “I am borrowing money off you so I can learn how to drive traffic”. Instead, you will give them a time and say ” I will return you, “X” amount on “X” date”. Once you land in the reality world you will realize it’s not that easy as you were thinking. Credit goes to you and your Push Button gurus who tell you all these formulas to make a few buck sales and then you are stuck. The same happens with those having Credit Cards in their hands and that’s one of the reason I still don’t use or own a credit card (Biggest reason is horror stories about people Banks and  credit cards in Dubai) , I only buy those things and products which I can afford by upfront payment in full. Even before that, I make sure that before making a purchase I have enough money in my accounts to cover other things. The Push Button Gurus are experts at this. Once you make a purchase they will show you another Shiny Golden Egg Product without which you cant survive and here you go; you will make another purchase and once you implement those ideas and methods, As you haven’t tried them before, so you fail. Soon you will give up and move on to next shiny product and expect money to fall from the sky.  And at the end when you have bills in hands or someone knocking on your door to collect money you owe them, you will try to escape that situation in every possible way, but there will be no escape when you are 0.

How to avoid these problems

Now here are a few tips which can help you to avoid such problems

  • If you are in need of quick cash better face reality and find yourself a job.
  • Consider building backup amount before entering into online ventures.
  • Make a proper SWOT analysis plan.
  • If you are short on cash start with free traffic methods and than once you have enough cash (at least $2500 to be safe , start playing with paid traffic if you have no prior experience at all.)
  • Find some alternative income source (freelancing,job or anything ) using which you can generate enough cash which can bare your advertising and learning expenses.
  • Learn Patience , Stick to one thing instead of jumping from one traffic source to another or jumping from one business model to another.
  • Stop looking for shortcuts and make a commitment with yourself that you will make it happen and wont give up , If you have taken action dont loose hope and keep doing what you are doing.
  • try to gain as much experience as possible.
  • Know your traffic source and the tools you are using.(Many people even don`t know how to setup a link and they jump into paid traffic and loose money by making foolish mistakes.
  • Never loose hope, Work hard and you will achieve success.
  • When buying a course or a product make sure you know who is selling it and make sure you do research about the person who is releasing it , Know if he is making living off selling courses every month or he actually does what he preach.
  • Get rid of financial dependency, If you borrow money from anyone that will create a huge pressure on your mind and you will be afraid of loosing money which will have negative impact on you and your campaigns and you wont be able to make it.
  • Know your traffic source, Know what you are doing and know what you are promoting.

 

P.S.  Purpose of this post is not to discourage anyone or keep them away from Affiliate/CPA Marketing, It is not necessary to have a fat wallet in order to succeed online as there are many ways to generate free traffic and even with paid traffic those who know what they are doing can easily make campaigns successful by investing very small amounts of money. However if you are starting from scratch without knowing what you are doing and where you are spending money its better to learn and educate yourself first and than enter into paid traffic world.
